Well well well.... it's that time of the year.
June always brings a cascade of exclusive summer events, including one of golf's most treasured tournaments, the U.S. Open. This year, the prestigious tournament will be hosted for its 125th edition on June 12th through June 15th at the Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania. Oakmont dates its founding back to 1904 when founder Henry C. Fownes - an iron and steel business magnate - opened its Tudor Revival clubhouse and inland style links course. The course ranks #5 on Golf Digest's Top 100 Greatest Golf Courses in 2025 and supposedly requires a $200,000 initiation fee - that is if one is invited for membership in the first place.
For those fortunate to attend this year's open, here are some quick tips from the Crew Dog family:
Comfortable Shoes Win the Day
You'll be walking for possibly miles as you follow players throughout the tournament. Depending where you are in the course, you might have to stand from inclines or ledges and the occasional rough. Golf shoes or acceptable sneakers can offer salvation to the weary while heels or Oxfords can be your downfall.
Semi-Formal is the Way
A summer dress for the ladies. A cardigan sweater overlaying an Essex Polo is reasonable if Oakmont becomes windy or mild. Men can opt for a classic polo with flexible trousers - preferably khaki. Jeans are not unwarranted, but some may wince. A few spectators choose the blazer, but that may be for those who will preside at a lounge or would rarely move away from a reserved seating. Toss out a lean, lightweight vest if desired.
Don't forget your visor or Hat
A golf visor or hat is a must. Sunglasses accompanying a hat will mitigate an unabating sun. Some tasteful choices include a brim sun hat for the women or a rope hat for the men.
Golf fashion for the U.S. Open can be simple and the intentional decisions will pay off.
